EARTH summary

The goal of the project is to address the global environmental challenge by investigating and proposing effective mechanisms to drastically reduce energy wastage and improve energy efficiency of mobile broadband communication systems, without compromising users perceived “quality” of service and system capacity.

The overall objective of the EARTH project is, by a combination of the results obtained in the following technical objectives, to achieve a reduction in overall energy consumption of mobile broadband networks of 50%, and to target energy consumption which is proportional to system load.

  • To develop an holistic methodology to characterize the energy consumption of cellular networks including suitable metrics.
  • To assess the potential of state-of-the-art radio network architecture principles and radio link technologies in terms of energy efficiency.
  • To derive deployment recommendations to reduce the energy consumption of mobile networks.
  • To derive mobile network management algorithms and protocols to reduce the energy consumption of mobile networks.
  • To develop radio base station components and radio link concepts that contribute to an energy efficient network operation.
  • To contribute to the standardization of methodologies and metrics to establish a framework for evaluating the energy efficiency of cellular networks.
  • To contribute to the standardization of broadband cellular networks, primarily in LTE (including LTE-Advanced) and UMTS/HSPA networks.
