Ericsson has given an IMS (IP Multimedia Subsystem) core device to the HSNLab for educational and innovation purposes. Based on this device, new laboratory work has been developed at TMIT covering the area ranging from device configuration to service provisioning, giving insight into the world of modern telecommunication and ICT applications and services. In Software Engineering BSc, Infocommunication Networks branch as part of the Network and Services Laboratory the laboratory work covers the management of the IMS subscribers, the configuration, provision and testing of IMS services (voice, instant messaging, presence, IPTV service).
IMS provides a common signaling network to a variety of applications and services. This common signaling network is separated from the content delivery network, so that the communication modes used in the two networks are independent. Thus, IMS serves as a single interface for service integration and real-time multimedia application provisioning. IMS, as a promising signaling plane for the Next Generation Networks (NGN) promotes the fixed-mobile Internet Protocol (IP) based multimedia services convergence, which is a major step towards the "all-IP" network architecture. IMS applications allow the simple combination of different communication forms (voice, video, text, etc.) within a single session, and in the long-term it helps to achieve the convergence of mobile telecommunications and Internet based Web technologies regardless of the used access network technologies.
IMS supports third-party services, thus increasing its popularity and extending the fields of applications, such services are:
